South Wales Grey Ware pottery from the cremation excavation

During a watching brief in Newport the partial remains of a single pottery vessel of undecorated South Wales Grey Ware containing fragments of burnt bone were identified in the eastern area of the development site. Only the lower part of the vessel survived to be excavated, the upper part of the vessel had been truncated through natural erosion and/or plough damage.

A single cremation of this type is somewhat unusual with much of the existing regional evidence relating to cemeteries and group inhumations such as Caerleon, Barry and Llandough. The Roman rite of vessel cremation was introduced by the military and remained dominant until the late 2nd century when inhumation appeared in the western provinces and then coexisted with inhumation during the 3rd century until inhumation dominated almost exclusively during the 4th century.

Research suggests a date for this cremation of c.2nd century AD, further analysis may provide a more defined date range.
